Conquest of Vesuvius
1 DayThe Mount Vesuvius Great Cone Walk is one of the most iconic hikes in Italy and a unique opportunity to conquer Europe’s most famous active volcano. Currently in a dormant state, Mount Vesuvius allows visitors to climb to the rim of its massive crater and experience a landscape shaped by volcanic power.
While hiking up Mount Vesuvius, you can look directly into the 300-meter-deep crater and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Bay of Naples, the city of Naples, and the distant ruins of Pompeii.
The path leading upward is a steep, winding trail where volcanic ash and small stones constantly roll beneath your feet. This terrain creates a raw and authentic volcanic hiking experience. At the crater rim, sulfurous vapors (fumaroles) rise from the ground, reminding hikers that the volcano is only sleeping.
The scenery combines fascinating geological formations with a powerful visual spectacle, making the trail both educational and adventurous. The route follows Trail No. 5, also known as the Great Cone Walk, the most famous hiking trail in Vesuvius National Park.
This hike is also a great option for solo travellers. The route is well-visited, clearly defined, and offers a safe and memorable volcanic adventure even if you are exploring Mount Vesuvius alone.

Fun Fact
Before the legendary eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, the word ‘volcano’ didn’t even exist. The term was coined afterwards, inspired by Vulcan, the Roman god of fire. That one eruption literally gave the world a new word!
