It's not just a matter for a small community
Many still believe that Budapest Pride is exclusively an internal affair of the LGBTQ+ community, and that anyone not directly affected has no business being there. Yet Pride is not a closed event, it is about freedom and equality—and that affects everyone, regardless of identity. This year, I decided not to just watch events from the sidelines, but to join the march itself. And from the inside, the vibration was entirely different.
We set off on the five-kilometer march in steaming heat close to forty degrees. There was nothing comfortable about it. When the soles of our shoes were melting in the sun and we were constantly hunting for water and shade, the whole experience suddenly became deeply relatable. It was about showing up as an ally and, through my presence, underlining a fundamental truth: equal dignity, and the right for no one to ever live in fear because of who they love.
Kilometers of Solidarity
There's a lot of talk about how walking helps you slow down, relax, and escape the daily grind.
The Budapest Pride has been organizing this pulsating, noisy parade since 2001, creating a space for authenticity, freedom, and self-acceptance. It is a massive, musical, liberating march. On the forty-degree asphalt, alongside the bass thumping from trucks, walking takes on a whole new meaning. The energy of the crowd breaks down labels, and in the shared rhythm, the only thing that matters is that we are present as equals. This experience shows that mindful walking goes beyond health metrics. It is a conscious choice about our time, our attention, and equality.
The sports world has long been using kilometers for charitable causes; we run marathons for important issues. Pride brings this same logic to walking, where the journey traveled is a celebration of acceptance and freedom. Our participation is what gives it weight.
Let’s put on comfortable shoes, step out onto the street, and walk those five kilometers. Our presence shapes the future, and through our movement, we shape the world.
